John Cena & CM Punk
So how does the Cena/Punk rivalry stand up against these other classic pairings? Previously we have seen two instances of top face vs top face, and one situation pitting two top heels in direct competition to lead the company. This time, it can be seen that we essentially have two tweeners, although Cena and Punk are actually playing traditional face and heel roles. For today's different types of viewer though, these roles are now blurred, and both characters will have their fans and detractors. The feud between these two began leading into the Money in the Bank PPV of 2011. Ahead of Raw 1000, with both men entering the match as clear faces, I wrote an article questioning whether the Cena vs Punk match would be an era defining match up. After Punk began to set the cogs in motion for changing his character into what we are now seeing, it looks like we may well have seen the beginnings of something big on that night. As Superman and Batman continue to clash, we will see how long they can coexist at the top of the pile. With the Dark Knight CM Punk combined with his own Alfred, fans now have a viable alternative to cheer or boo other than Superman John Cena. Based on previous times when WWE has had 2 men at the top, Punk and Cena should create some memorable moments and define an era together. For years the DC Universe has been divided as to who the favourite is between The Man of Steel and The Dark Knight. Now, it looks like the WWE Universe will get the chance to have the same debate once again.
