Admit it, there was a niggling worry at the back of your mind come main event time at Clash Of Champions. Surely to God WWE wouldn't put the belt back on Jinder Mahal, undermine AJ Styles and end the pay-per-view on such a sour note. They didn't, but it wasn't an impossibility that creative might want Styles to drop the strap and instead gun for the Royal Rumble in January.

He can't do that when champ, at least unless WWE insert some sort of title defence for the 30-man match like they did for Roman Reigns in 2016. That doesn't seem to the be the plan though, so AJ holding onto the title against Jinder was vital for fans who view him as the best candidate to main event SmackDown shows well into the new year.

We implore you, WWE, give Styles the matches and opponents his top-notch talents deserve in 2018. He's a worthy WrestleMania headliner if you're tempted by that route too. For now, fans can wipe beads of sweat from their brow and realise that AJ will probably (hopefully) be WWE Champ when calendars turn.
