WWE Clash Of Champions 2017: 8 Things WWE Got Right

2. Focusing More On Story In The Main Tag Match

Without the involvement of Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan, a match like Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn vs. Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura seemed more like a SmackDown TV match than a pay-per-view epic. WWE realised that, and whichever agents put together the match also spotted that it was more about telling a story than stringing together impressive spots.

This quartet could easily have better matches than they did at Clash Of Champions. Oddly, they didn't need to, because the distractions provided by duelling refs McMahon and Bryan meant the actual wrestlers had an easier-than-expected shift. In WWE, storytelling is king, and this match was evidence of that fact.

It worked. From start to finish, fans waited with baited breath for a referee bump that would never come. The rising tension between SmackDown Commish and GM should see WWE through to the new year, and possibly beyond depending on WrestleMania. Good job, everyone.
