WWE Files Iconic New Trademark Application
WWE's latest trademark filing could be setting the stage for a legendary return...
WWE has filed a trademark application for 'WWE King and Queen of the Ring' with the United States Patent and Trademark office.
Dated 8 December 2022, the application suggests that WWE plans on using the mark for an upcoming show, listing the following purpose (per the USPTO's database):-
IC 041. US 100 101 107. G & S: Entertainment services, namely, a show about professional wrestling; entertainment services, namely, the production and exhibition of professional wrestling events rendered through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing wrestling news and information through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment through broadcast media including television and distributed via various platforms across multiple forms of transmission media; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information
Lauren A. Dienes-Middlen was listed as the Attorney of Record.
That WWE has been planning on reviving its classic King of the Ring tournament format has been speculated for months now. In November, GiveMeSport and WrestleVotes reported there was a "very good chance" of the competition coming back, with the new trademark application intimating that there may be a women's equivalent, Queen of the Ring, in the works too.
WWE's last King of the Ring was Xavier Woods, who took the crown in October 2021. That bracket also ran in conjunction with the first Queen's Crown Tournament, won by Zelina Vega.
2015 was the last time WWE has run King of the Ring as its own dedicated pay-per-view/premium live event. Prior to this, disgraced former Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon cut the PPV from rotation in 2002, citing poor buyrates.
