Update: Dave Meltzer has confirmed that WWE wants Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Kevin Owens match at WrestleMania 38.

Ever since WrestleMania 38 was announced for Dallas, Texas and the first promo videos heavily featured "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, fans have speculated that the Hall-of-Famer could come out of retirement for one last match in his home state.

Now, a report from Fightful Select reveals that WWE has been seriously trying to land Austin for a Mania match. The company apparently has "made a significant overture" toward Stone Cold to try lure the Texas Rattlesnake to have his first match since WrestleMania 19 in 2003. This wouldn't be the first time someone has tried to get Austin, 57, to wrestle again, but given his age and the location of Mania, this could be the last, best chance to make it happen.

Austin retired after Mania 19 due to accumulated injuries. He's stayed active with WWE through the years and has gotten physical several times, delivering Stunners regularly during his returns to the company.

Fightful indicated it hasn't gotten any concrete information from WWE, but their sources have ranged "from being coy, to saying they assume it will happen." At the very least, the expectation is that Stone Cold will get physical at WrestleMania.

As far as an opponent, many assume Kevin Owens would be the ideal candidate, given his heel promo against Texas on Raw Monday night. Throw in that KO uses the Stunner as a finisher and you've got enough to justify a mini-feud.

One request though: If they go through with this, just let Owens and Austin do their own material. Don't have those goof writers try to script two of the most gifted talkers out there. That's really the only way WWE could ruin this. Give them two mics and plenty of TV time and get the hell out of the way.
