Putting suspension of disbelief aside for a second, seasoned pro wrestling fans know that Titus O'Neil is a placeholder in the top challenger spot for Rusev's WWE United States Title. There's nothing wrong with having such challenges, because it's imperative that the Bulgarian is restored to the level he was at before the writing staff completely ruined him in 2015.

O'Neil is a stepping stone, and therefore the match between he and Rusev has to end logically. There's an argument to be made that Rusev's WWE run would be completely shattered if he lost to Titus, a man who hasn't even properly been booked in the lead up to his big title shot.

The former Prime Time Player just sort of returned from suspension and was thrust into the title hunt, he hasn't really been winning matches with any real consistency on television. Rusev has to sell the physical threat of his challenger, but then ultimately fend him off with the Accolade and leave with the babe (Lana) and the gold still in his possession.
