Cody Rhodes' transition to Stardust hasn't always been well received by fans, but you can't deny how much thought and effort he puts into the character, especially compared to some of his colleagues. If Cody hadn't have thrown himself entirely into the gimmick, there's no way it would have worked as well as it has, and Cody's innate knowledge of supervillains and comic book history has given him a lot to draw inspiration from.

Stardust has been trying to vanquish Neville for months, but at MSG he donned his foe's cape and headed to the top rope just like Neville would. This is something you see a lot with supervillains like Hugo Strange & Batman, or Kraven The Hunter & Spider-Man, where they don't just want to eliminate the hero, they want to take their place too.
