In order for any pro wrestling match to go off without a hitch, everybody involved has to work together in harmony. That doesn't stop with the wrestlers themselves, the referee also plays an important part in piecing together what's happening inside the ring. Sometimes, the ref also has a role in what happens outside of it too.

That was the case at No Mercy. AJ Styles was jawing off with senior official Mike Chioda at ringside, waiting on Dean Ambrose to perform his trademark dive spot onto him. The idea was that Styles was distracted by his argument with Chioda, meaning he didn't really see Ambrose coming.

Those paying close attention to the pay-per-view may have noticed Styles relaying a short message to the referee during this part of the match. In between criticising Chioda, AJ slyly said, 'here he comes' to the official.

That was Chioda's cue to get himself out of dodge and allow Styles to catch a flying Ambrose. AJ had pulled the referee from the ring, breaking up a near fall, so the spot made sense.
