WWE Payback 2016: Every Match Ranked From Worst To Best
5. Women's Title: Charlotte (c) Vs. Natalya
Result: Charlotte locks Natalya in the Sharpshooter and referee Charles Robinson calls for the bell...despite Natalya not tapping (13:07).
Rating: This was a decent match completely derailed by its embarrassingly crappy ending, because Vince McMahon apparently couldn't resist recreating the Montreal Screwjob with Bret Hart in Natalya's corner.
While it was at least a little refreshing to see Charlotte get a dirty heel win that didn't come directly from her dad, it was still horribly cheap and made zero sense booking-wise. Considering that kayfabe-wise this decision presumably wasn't the doing of the McMahons, wouldn't Robinson be called to order for basically being bribed into screwing a competing athlete?
It just makes no sense, and unless we get an extremely satisfying explanation on Raw (which we probably won't), all this did was undermine two solid athletes trying to put on an otherwise entertaining bout. At least we got to see Bret put Ric in the Sharpshooter post-match, though. 5/10
