It's fair to say that expectations weren't at all high for this year's Payback PPV, hastily thrown together a mere week after SummerSlam as it was with basically no build whatsoever.

But thankfully the show was ultimately more than just a dull, uninspired spate of SummerSlam rematches and consequence-free match-ups.

Above all else, this was an incredibly consistent night of wrestling which moved fast and wrapped itself up within a reasonable 2.5 hours.

Beyond the underwhelming misfire of a main event, there wasn't a single bad match among the bunch, and while Payback 2020 rarely strove for true greatness, it was nevertheless a solid showcase for WWE's finest talents.

A surprising number of titles actually changed hands in what could so easily have been a mere filler PPV, and if nothing else the show's ending certainly left fans curious to see where it's all going.

If WWE actually dares to commit to their potentially compelling Universal Title program moving forward, they just might be onto something here...
