Fightful Select is reporting that members of the creative team are asking questions about Gunther's recent direction on episodes of SmackDown. The 'Ring General' has gone from retiring top names like Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles to hamming it up in backstage skits and matches against comedy characters like Danhausen.

However, Gunther is still technically involved in the WWE Title mix. He's currently warring with fellow title hopeful Finn Bálor, but the Danhausen stuff has some behind the curtain concerned about where things are going.

The current plan has "raised questions" from some on the creative squad to their higher ups. A few are wondering out loud if WWE even had a solid plan in place for Gunther once he'd shut down Cena at Saturday Night's Main Event on 13 December 2025.

Recent evidence since moving to SmackDown from Raw would suggest that people are right to query that.

Gunther mopped the floor with Danhausen on last week's show, and he'll surely now move on completely from the walking sideshow. Most wrestling fans would agree that Dan has his place on the product, but it probably isn't opposite a more serious wrestling machine like the acclaimed Austrian brute.

As Fightful reports, "There appears to be some uncertainty regarding how WWE intends to capitalise on the momentum Gunther had built in recent months". There's surely no denying that he could be doing more on SmackDown than he has been. Way more.

Of course, there's time yet for things to change in a hurry.
