The Swiss Superman, like many, had a mixed week. He lost a good competitive match at Payback, where he unsuccessfully challenged Sheamus for the United States Championship to a surprise small package. He followed it up by walking out on his partner, Bad News Barrett on Raw. He wasn't finished with the Brit though, as he interrupted his championship match with Rob Van Dam on Main Event, attacking both men to place himself firmly in the championship picture. And that's exactly where it landed him. In an excellent triple threat match for the Intercontinental Championship on SmackDown, against Barrett and Van Dam, where he was also unsuccessful in capturing the gold. However, Cesaro was not involved in the decision and so technically didn't lose and remains firmly in the championship picture.
