Having Chris Jericho debut on RAW in a verbal battle with The Rock was a stroke of genius by WWE. Firstly, both men are outstanding on a microphone. Furthermore both men are arrogant, cocky and smug characters who specialise in making their opponents look and feel small. It was obvious that the crowd was going to pop big for this debut - which it did - but to keep Jericho from becoming an instant babyface The Rock was utilised to keep him in his designated role as a heel - because let's face it, The Rock will always be the default babyface. Jericho would re debut several times over the years but WWE was never again able to capture the lightening in a bottle moment when he first exploded on to the scene in 1999.
