The first WWE PPV of the year came in the form of the 34th-annual Royal Rumble. A staple of the WWE calendar, the legendary event is renowned for kicking off the company's revered 'Road to WrestleMania' and often kicks off an exciting new chapter for the superstar(s) lucky enough to win its titular contest(s) while it's at it.
But it wasn't all over the top rope shenanigans as the night also saw Drew McIntyre break Goldberg's pre-WrestleMania burial streak by denying him the WWE Championship in the opening bout while Sasha Banks maintained her dominance as SmackDown's Women's Champion by defeating Carmella before the blue brand's most bitter rivals, Kevin Owens and Roman Reigns, brought the virtual house down in an epic Last Man Standing match.
History was made in the two Royal Rumble matches, however, as Bianca Belair rounded out her first year on the main roster by winning the women's installment while Edge made a fairytale comeback by outlasting all 29 superstars to become the winner of the men's offering.
