WWE & Sky Sports Renews UK & Ireland Deal Until 2019

Screen Shot 2014 01 30 At 08 15 25 BSkyB have renewed their exclusive UK and Ireland broadcasting deal with the WWE until 2019, a press release has confirmed this morning. This means BSkyB will continue to broadcast "WWE's weekly flagship programming" to their 15.5 million subscribers until 2019. WWE's current contract with BSkyB was due to expire this year but this new deal will see the long-standing partnership between the wrestling promotion and the premium broadcaster run into a 30th year. The press release confirms that BSkyB will continue to broadcast WWE Raw and SmackDown and will now also add WWE Main Event to the line-up in HD on Sky Sports and Sky One. The statement also clearly reads that "All 12 WWE pay-per-views will also be available on Sky Sports Box Office including the annual pop-culture extravaganza WrestleMania®." which confirms the end of "free" PPVs. WWE had in recent years offered several PPVs for Sky Sports subscribers such as December's TLC PPV. Of course the press release still doesn't answer the big question on the minds of UK and Ireland based WWE fans ever since the WWE Network was officially revealed earlier this year. At last month's press conference it was said the WWE Network would be coming to the UK in 2015 but how the renewal of the Sky Sports deal effects this, if at all, is completely unclear. However the press release does state Sky will "exclusively" carry the WWE's flagship programs until 2019. Unless the Network is eventually in partnership with Sky (which many fans have suggested could work as a premium channel), it's hard to see how WWE Network in the UK and Ireland will be viable.
