3. Mixed Tag Leaves Mixed Emotions
Before the much-anticipated main event, there was one more match to deal with as the personal rivalry between Dolph Ziggler, Kaitlyn, Big E. Langston and AJ Lee would come to a head in a mixed tag team match. The crowd were understandably not entirely hot for this match due to the excitement of the Punk/Lesnar classic they had just witnessed, and of course the need to regain energy for the WWE Championship match. Though I sympathise with the audience, maybe the line-up of the show should have been changed so this match came on before the prior bout and the divas took their place, because like it or not they weren't going to get any reaction either way. The tepid reception made the match feel somewhat uncomfortable to watch, and again signalled a huge fall from grace for Ziggler. Ziggler is one of the most consistent in-ring wrestlers in the world at the moment, Langston has a great deal going for him with his mix of power and speed, Lee is one of the three best female wrestlers in the company and is the Divas Champion, and Kaitlyn is steadily improving in the ring. The issue of this match was not the action, which was more than competent and would have looked fitting on any PPV. Ziggler and Langston melded reasonably well in the short time they were in the ring, with Ziggler trying to employ his speed and agility against the strength of Langston, whilst Lee and Kaitlyn was the familiar mix of Kaitlyn's physicality and Lee's well-versed submission holds. The problem was that all of the characters are not exactly fitting at the moment. Ziggler doesn't feel right as a face, and arguably had more crowd support and likeability when he was a heel. He was arrogant and over-assured about his ability because he could back it up, and the fact that he has to tone down that side of himself makes him seem restrained. Furthermore, Kaitlyn has seemingly zero crowd reaction due to having a pretty bland on-screen personality generally that is sometimes injected with some rage. Lee is obviously good as a crazy and frustrated heel, but I feel Langston could be well suited to being a face, because he seems to be a humorous personality and could bring that side to the ring as well as his physical side. There was not a great deal of investment in the match, though the match itself was able to tell a good story and none of them should feel negative about the show they put on. But at the moment I feel that all of them are being slightly held back by their current booking.
