AJ Styles' SummerSlam bow came seven months after his full WWE debut at the 2016 Royal Rumble. The Phenominal One faced John Cena one on one after the former won their battle at Money in the Bank (not without a little help from his friends Gallows and Anderson).

The two renewed their rivalry at the biggest party of the summer and after a miraculous kick out from an AA off the top rope, AJ managed to hit the Styles Clash and the Phenomenal Forearm to have his hand raised after the bell. This match was AJ announcing he was one of the best in the world, and was rewarded shortly after, being named No. 1 contender for the WWE World Championship.

One year on, Styles was defending his US Title against Kevin Owens. This came off the back of another controversial victory for The Phenomenal One, when he beat KO while his shoulder was clearly off the mat.

The rematch officiated by Shane O'Mac had a more decisive finish, with Styles hitting the Styles Clash for the clean win.
