WWE officials once told Brian Cage over the phone that he was "average at best".

The AEW man, who recently re-signed with the company and has popped up on ROH, told Chris Van Vliet's 'Insight' show that he was horrified when WWE rubbished his in-ring skills years ago. They'd previously released Cage in 2009 just as he thought he was about to be called up to the main roster from developmental.

Big Bri lived that nightmare all over again a few years later.

He was in the running for a spot on the third season of the old NXT show (which ended up being all-female) in 2010. Then, the promotion got in touch again about possibly drafting Cage in for Tough Enough in 2011 - he was excited about that because Steve Austin was cast as the main judge on the show.

That's when WWE staff called Cage up and called him "average at best". The wrestler was fuming, because he'd worked hard to improve after previous setbacks. At that point, Brian decided to stop chasing the WWE dream and seek pro wrestling happiness elsewhere.
