Tonight, Brock Lesnar is scheduled to face the Big Show, in a mammoth showdown between the two, at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Rather than become an entrant for the Royal Rumble and aim to headline Wrestlemania 30 as a challenger for the WWE title, Lesnar would bypass the process and proclaim himself the number one contender for the WWE title. His agent, Paul Heyman, would declare that no one in the WWE roster could defeat Brock Lesnar. This prompted the likes of Mark Henry and Big Show to step up to the challenge, only for one to be destroyed by Lesnar, whilst the other would have him fleeing. As the weeks progressed the Big Show would challenge Lesnar to a match at the Royal Rumble. Lesnar accepts and then tangle himself into a meaningless feud with the Big Show. Maybe the WWE plans to sacrifice Big Show to rebuild Lesnar's monster aura. Maybe this storyline is being used to build interest for his upcoming feud with the next WWE champion and Lesnar needs to look like a legitimate threat again. We just don't know, but from a fan perspective Brock Lesnar is essentially being wasted by facing the Big Show. Sure it would be an awesome spectacle to see him manhandle the Big Show like a decade before. But the question is would you, as a paying customer, rather watch Brock Lesnar face off against the Big Show? Or would you rather see him in the ring with 29 other superstars in the Royal Rumble? The obvious choice is to see him in the Royal Rumble itself. When Lesnar first returned to the WWE, it felt like a monumental change. It wasn't quick until we saw him in feuds against the likes of John Cena, Triple H and CM Punk. Pretty much feuds we as fans wanted to see. However there is a whole roster of talent that Lesnar has yet to confront. What if he was to encounter force known as the Shield during the Rumble? Or have a stare down with likes of Roman Reigns, Big E Langston or say Ryback? How about the Wyatt Family and what would his reaction be to Bray Wyatt? What about the Real Americans? What if he was in the presence of Sheamus, CM Punk or Daniel Bryan? Or how about teasing a big money match against Batista? The scenarios are countless, but the important matter at hand is that there are newer, less established wrestlers in the roster. Guys who could benefit from the little rub from a bigger star, like Lesnar, so that they too could look like a legitimate stars in the future and help continue the prosperity of the WWE. In 2002 when Lesnar first debuted, he went through the likes of Hulk Hogan, The Rock, Ric Flair, The Undertaker and many more. He destroyed them. There were even plans to have him face Stone Cold Steve Austin. A lot of high profile characters were used to help establish Lesnar's dominant presence within the WWE. Move forward to 2014 and there is noticeable decrease in star power within the WWE. Now Brock Lesnar is the megastar he was destined to be. Surely it wouldn't hurt if he was a part of the Rumble, right? He would be put to good use and help elevate newer talents on the roster who might not get the opportunity to work with him in the first place. What better way to repay the favor he was given a decade before. Maybe we might see him in the Rumble and do double duty after his match. That possibility is still open. It has happened in past Rumbles and can certainly happen again. To conclude my point, I think the current story-line would have been much more effective had Brock Lesnar and the Big Show announced themselves as entrants for the Royal Rumble. We already seen Lesnar getting tossed around like a rag doll by both Henry and Show and it would have played out beautifully in the Rumble itself. That is natural storytelling. A missed opportunity, I guess. We can only find out what happens tonight on pay-per-view.
