5. The Dull Backstory
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OnER0zmcQY8 I'm a pretty big fan of the Wyatt's character. I'm not quite as crazy about the group as some, but I think they do a lot of things right. For a start, they've been very well protected by the booking team so far. Similar to The Shield, they've seen a consistency in their push rare for modern programming. In terms of presentation too, The Wyatts have been superbly handled. Their entrance is hypnotic, complete with theatrics and a killer theme. Their look is striking and fits in perfectly with their characters. Even if their shirts are suspiciously well ironed for a group of country hicks. The cherry on top is Bray's strange, rambling promo's, which are among the best delivered in the business. The issue I have with the Wyatts is that I don't really understand what they're all about. I know that many will say that is part of their charm. I would agree if I felt there was any chance of WWE providing a more concrete motivation for their actions. So far Bray has made vague claims about Cena being a liar, about this is a terrible world and him being an illusion. It all sounds quite cool and threatening, but what does any of it actually mean? I haven't a clue. I've been quite hard on Cena throughout this article, but the blame here lies on the Bray Wyatt character and the booking team. Just like The Shield before them, there's talk of some greater purpose which the writers have no intention of panning out. It's a frustrating part of WWE programming that we've just gotten used to over the years. Look, I'm not expecting brilliant storytelling here. I just want something concrete to pull me into this feud and to The Wyatt's story. No matter how great Bray's promo's are, without a sincere and believable motivation I can't become fully invested in the character.
