It's fair to say that WWE2K20, the latest in 2K's long-running series of WWE video games, had something of a torrid launch. An unfinished, bug-riddled mess, the title quickly became a source of both ire and ridicule, earning itself a roofing surplus yard's supply of slatings from the majority of the gaming press.
Although there can be no real excuses for just how bad 2K20's issues were at launch, there were a set of mitigating factors informing the game's troubled development. After a falling out between 2K Sports and long time devs. Yukes', the project was handed over entirely to Visual Concepts. It's since emerged that the new creators lacked both time and resources necessary in their ambitious attempt to build a new game from the ground up - leading to an iteration several steps behind the previous five or so entries.
WWE2K20 currently possesses an ignominious 41/100 Metacritic score, and naturally, it's something publisher Take-Two - who operate 2K Games - are not over the moon about. During a recent earnings call, president Karl Slatoff understated that the company is "disappointed" with the scores, but reassured angry buyers that Visual Concepts are working tirelessly to fix the problems.
Does the publisher have any plans to drop the WWE 2K series following this debacle? Nope. Slatoff said, "we believe there remains a substantial long-term opportunity to grow our WWE 2K series by improving the quality of the game."
Aha! It's much easier to do that by setting such a low bar. It all makes sense now.
