WWE's Cody Rhodes Responds To Fans' Online Support

The American Nightmare breaks his silence regarding reactions from the wrestling community.

In the three days since Cody Rhodes cut that fateful promo on WWE SmackDown and apparently ceded his WrestleMania XL Undisputed WWE Universal Title match to allow The Rock to face off again Roman Reigns, fan reaction has been nothing short of overwhelming.

The hashtag #WeWantCody has trended near the top of X (formerly Twitter) for three days. The WWE YouTube video of the Roman-Rock-Cody segment has become the most disliked video in the company's 17-year history on the platform, with three times as many downvotes as the next closest video. WWE talent and staff have spoken up about concerns with the plans as well.

But the subject of much of the online furor has remained mostly silent... until Monday night.

It was Cody's first X post since SmackDown aired, and it's bound to spark intense debate about what it could possibly mean. Rhodes telling fans to "trust me" leaves open the speculation that there's actually a plan here -- whether that involves Cody challenging Roman at Elimination Chamber (though Reigns isn't currently slated to work that show) or for WWE to pull a massive swerve.

Or it could be Cody trying to tamp down some of the more unsavory reactions online. NXT GM Ava, The Rock's daughter, revealed that she's received death threats over the situation.

Regardless, Cody trying to tell fans there's a plan here is dicey. He spent his promo Friday making it clear that he really wanted Roman's Undisputed WWE Universal Championship -- the same one his dad failed to win -- and that he wanted to beat Reigns for it. It's been his entire motivation since he returned to WWE in 2022, and they're going to need to thread a needle here to make this work and mollify frustrated fans.

He fortunately became a fan in time for WrestleMania III and came back as a fan after a long high school hiatus before WM XIV. Monday nights in the Carlson household are reserved for viewing Raw -- for better or worse.
