Dan Severn, nicknamed The Beast, was one of two men on the roster with legitimate a fighting background. The other, Ken Shamrock, was not allowed to enter the tournament. As one of the pioneers of mixed martial arts, Severn was the first and only UFC Triple Crown Champion. He entered WWE in 1997 whilst still holding the NWA World Championship belt, a title he held on for four years.

Beating in The Godfather in first round Severn pulled out of the tournament saying he had nothing to prove. But in reality Severn was concerned that his reputation as a fighter would be damaged if he stayed in the tournament.

Since leaving WWE in 1999 Severn has continued wrestling, making the odd appearance on the independent circuit. In 2010 he was inducted into the NWA Hall of Fame. He is also still technically active in MMA. He retired in 2013 but has since stated his desire to return. A proposed bout against Ken Shamrock fell through in 2016. In 2005 he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.
