Young Rock Episode 1 Review: 4 Ups & 3 Downs

1. Old School Wrestling Cameos

Young Rock
NBC

I was not expecting to see The Iron Sheik making margaritas, but boy am I glad I did.

Rocky Johnson, Iron Sheik, The Wild Samoans, and Andre the Giant all feature in an early scene, playing poker and talking wrestling terminology, and it will have fans smiling from ear to ear. There's even an introduction for each wrestler with a title card featuring retro, suitably 80s, graphics. The facial likeness' might not be perfect for all the actors, but the outfits and mannerisms get their personas across well.

The show will feature future WWF/WWE cameos, so fans have something for the future. Vince McMahon is one of the upcoming cameos, and with as many crazy stories attached to his name as there have been wrestlers in the WWE, we can't wait to see what tale Young Rock chooses to tell.

It would have been nice to see more wrestling content, but with it so intermingled within The Rock's life, it's bound to become more in depth later in the show. Non-wrestling fans should still get a kick out of Matthew Willig's and Joseph Lee Anderson's Andre the Giant and Rocky Johnson performances. Anderson in particular injects charm and humour into The Rock's dad, and is one of the standout performances from the episode.

And next for the Downs...
