10 Greatest Jack Kirby Characters
3. Kamandi

Written and drawn by Jack Kirby for DC Comics, Kamandi: The Last Boy on Earth took ideas from the Planet of the Apes film and expanded on them in a way that only comics could achieve. DC was originally supposed to get the license to produce a Planet of the Apes comic, but when this fell apart, Kirby was tapped to do a similar story, and it's spectacular.
Kamandi is a teenager who lives in a post-apocalyptic world with highly intelligent anthropomorphic animals. While Kirby is best known for his artistic abilities, when he was working on Kamandi he was also able to provide the scripts for the first 37 issues of the title. Kamandi gave the opportunity for Kirby to show all of his creativity, and the title and character are grossly underappreciated.
Kamandi took the end of the world story and turned it into an adventure. Unlike many tales in the same vein, Kirby built strong heroes and villains that added depth to the world. The book, which boasted an initial run of 59 issues, grounded the story by having a normal character in the centre of an insane world. The imagination Kirby put into Kamandi's story ensures that it stands out as one of his best works.
