10 Greatest Jack Kirby Characters

2. Silver Surfer

Jack Kirby Marvel Comics
Marvel Comics

The Silver Surfer flew onto the pages of Marvel Comics in Fantastic Four #48. Using the Marvel method of storytelling, Lee and Kirby would plot a story together. From there, Kirby would do the art and give it to Lee for scripting. To Lee's surprise, there was a new character that the two had not discussed together. This Kirby creation became known as the Silver Surfer.

Kirby was at his best when he took a character and put them out into the cosmos, and with the Silver Surfer he got to draw everything from space to the microverse. Kirby designed a sleek character that acted as one of the most tragic characters ever put on the pages of a Marvel comic, sacrificing his future for Earth. He's a character with nearly unlimited power that is humbled by the potential good in humanity that he sees.

The Silver Surfer was such a favorite of Kirby's that he agreed to come back to Marvel and work with Stan Lee one final time on an adaptation of a Silver Surfer script that never made it to film.
