"Face the wrath of The Crimson Bolt!"

James Gunn brings the visceral comedy with this most alternative of superhero stories, as Rainn Wilson doles out the beautifully disproportionate and comedic justice as a masked vigilante called The Crimson Bolt.

After his recovering addict wife falls back in with the wrong crowd and leaves him for a scumbag strip club owner Jaques, Frank is lost to despair, until visions that have plagued him his whole life guide him to his holy purpose: to f**k things up as a wrench wielding vigilante. Frank's tenuous grip on reality is something that helps him in his rescue mission but he'd rather believe he has been chosen by God to right the wrongs than fully accept things as they are.

Gunn delights in the disgusting imagery and brutal action as the film unfolds, but he also shows us his indie credentials with some subtle, well crafted humour and drama. The end result is a film that really does feel like a comic book, written and drawn by a sentimental psychopath.

This film doesn't shy away from the harmful effect of vigilantism and just when you're about to condemn Frank's actions as insane, he flips it on the rule breakers nicely. This is a movie that glorifies with one hand and blames with the other. Despite the gruesome, questionable, and at times tragic effects, it makes the point that trying to do the right thing is better than standing by.

Super is a strange mix of cynicism and hope. It has zero ego and lots of heart. And brains. And guts. Literally.
