10 Offbeat Superhero Films You MUST See

"I'm touching myself tonight."

The merc with a mouth makes this list for his meta antics and sexy, bloody exploits. When compiling a list of offbeat superhero films you have to include the one film in existence that sees the hero sodomised and later masturbating to a unicorn plush toy with a half grown hand. You just have to.

Poking fun at every other superhero movie including ones fairly close to home is a commendable thing to see from a big budget film and Ryan Reynolds in particular. It's no secret that Mr. Reynolds was the driving force behind production of the Deadpool film for around a decade. It's nice to see that after all that effort, the first person he casts Wade's gaze on was himself. Respect, sir.

Constant references to budget, casting, and other film franchises aside, Deadpool is a major studio superhero film that contains gratuitous sex, violence, and gore. And it is all for the sheer joy of it just as much as moving the story along; superhero films are rarely celebrations of these things though they contain them.

Roasting everything we love and hate about superhero movies is not quite virgin territory, but to sneak in a compelling story around a whirlwind of film nods and jabs is the polar opposite of that trend. It also happens to be expertly done. The protagonist doesn't even fully embrace heroism, opting for revenge instead.

Subversive, irreverent, and morally ambiguous, Deadpool goes about as far as a superhero movie can go...until Deadpool 2.

Eddie is a writer, cinephile, TV fan and wrestling abuse victim from Newcastle. After receiving his film degree in London he returned home to lift boxes in the vein of an 80s montage... It's not as fun as it looks in the films.
