10 Weird Marvel Heroes You Won't Believe Exist
8. NFL SuperPro
In 1991, Marvel did a deal with the NFL to create a new superhero. The result is often cited as the worst comic book ever written, but that doesn't even begin to do justice to the glorious awfulness of NFL SuperPro.
Phil Grayfield was an ex-NFL player who met the single person of the planet that occupies the overlap on the Venn diagram of mad scientists and obsessive American football fans.
The scientist had built an indestructible football uniform, but, as he was showing the uniform to Phil, a bunch of thieves broke in, stole some football memorabilia and set the place on fire.
The fumes from the burning super-rare and expensive souvenirs (which the thieves didn't steal) gave Phil superpowers and, donning the super-rare and expensive uniform (which the thieves also didn't steal), he became SuperPro.
Despite fighting enemies like the penny-spewing Almighty Dollar and the time-travelling Instant Replay, NFL SuperPro's series proved that there is no God by running for 12 issues and a Super Bowl special. Fabian Nicieza was happy to admit that he wrote the whole thing for free football tickets.
Thanks to copyright issues, SuperPro hasn't been seen since his series ended. Stilt-Man did mention beating him up once though. Even the guy whose power is basically just reaching high shelves thought SuperPro was lame.
