The Comic: Written by Cullen Bunn and illustrated by Vanesa R. Del Rey, 2014's The Empty Man graphic novel is a mystery-thriller about the unstoppable Empty Man disease: an infection of unknown origin that causes hallucinations, violent outbursts, and death. It can also incite a lifeless - or "empty" - catatonic state.

As you'd imagine, society begins to crumble, and the hunt for a cure begins. There are also kidnapped children, murder cults, and suicidal dementia; The Empty Man is a dark, haunting story that's perfect adaptation material.

The Movie: In 2016, 20th Century Fox optioned the graphic novel and set director David Prior to write and helm. Months later, THR reported that James Badge Dale (Iron Man 3) had been cast in the film, and in that same report, the outlet mentioned that Prior's script would take some departures from the source material.

Filming began in August 2017, meaning that the movie is probably completed, and sitting on a shelf somewhere. We haven't had any major updates in a while, and with the upcoming Disney-Fox merger set to shake Fox's slate up significantly, it's hard to say what the future holds for The Empty Man.
