10 Fan Theories That Completely Change The Harry Potter Movies

9. Neville's Ineptitude Is Because Of His Wand

Throughout the first several seasons of Neville's academic career at Hogwarts, he's widely acknowledged to be a terrible wizard. The only class he excels at is Herbology, and that's one of the few subjects at Hogwarts that doesn't actually require its students to use any magic. Neville is pretty much hopeless, or so everyone believes. But J.K. Rowling has been very detailed in her explanations of wand lore, and one of the main tenets is that the want chooses the wizard; he will never be able to use another wizard's wand with as good as results as his own. And whose wand does Neville use during his first years at Hogwarts? His father's, a man who was tortured into insanity by Death Eaters and therefore had little use for a wand. Neville doesn't get a wand of his very own until after his father's is broken during the battle at the Ministry in Order of the Phoenix. Which, if you'll recall, is right about the time that Neville starts becoming a supreme badass. While it's possible that Neville matured and became more confident in his abilities as he grew older, it's equally likely that he was always a competent wizard, just one handicapped by an inferior wand.
