4. Artax - The Neverending Story

So what if Artax is a horse - and not even an anthropomorphized horse that you can attribute human feelings to, just a regular horse. His death sequence is still painfully sad.

He's Atreyu's only companion, and while their quest to save the Childlike Empress from the Nothing is getting more and more desperate, they happen upon the Swamps of Sadness.

Which, as far as names go, seems particularly ominous. Atreyu is able to wade through it, but Artax succumbs to the sadness and begins to sink slowly into the swamp. And there's nothing that Atreyu can do to stop it - he's standing there sobbing, begging Artax to pull through, physically trying to move it.

But Artax doesn't have the willpower to survive. It's devastating when you watch this movie as a kid, but then when you think about it as an adult as a metaphor for depression, it just completely pushes it over the top into a new level of heartbreaking.
