Bone Tomahawk became an instant cult favourite in 2016, but sadly most audiences haven’t even heard of it. It's a western following a group of men – including Kurt Russell’s sheriff – trying to rescue a woman from a band of Indians. It turns out this particular tribe are a clan of ruthless, animalistic cannibals, and they don’t treat potential meals with kindness.

In the third act, the group are captured, and Russell is forced to watch while his deputy is stripped naked, scalped and then split down the middle like a wishbone, leading to his intestines spilling all over the floor.

It’s a truly shocking, horrific sequence, not least because viewers weren’t expecting to see such graphic imagery in what had been a traditional Western up to that point.
