13 Most Controversial Movie Moments Of 2017

3. Shaw Dies Off-Screen - Alien: Covenant

The Moment: Daniels (Katherine Waterston) discovers the butchered remains of the Prometheus' sole survivor Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), having clearly been experimented upon by android David (Michael Fassbender) after arriving on the Engineer homeworld.

Why It's Controversial: Of all the things the new Alien movie got wrong, this was the most egregious, even if most fans saw it coming due to Rapace's total absence from the film's trailers.

Shaw was a genuinely likeable and compelling character, and Prometheus ended with an intriguing setup for the next movie, which should've seen Shaw exploring the Engineer planet. Instead, Shaw got more screen time in the pre-release viral videos than she did the final movie, where all we see is her corpse, which didn't even require Rapace to be on-set.

Even if they were hell-bent on having Shaw die, why not have Daniels find her alive, and then have David kill her? It still would've been disappointing, but at least fans wouldn't have had to deal with such an awkward and underwhelming off-screen death.
