With Days Of Thunder and Far And Away under her belt, Kidman was a rising star in the early '90s without quite having the draw she'd see towards the end of the decade. According to news reports at the time, she read for Ellie Sattler as part of the army of linked actresses, but was unsuccessful. She instead went on to make the entirely forgettable Malice and My Life before scoring two major profile boosts with To Die For and Batman Forever in 1995.
Julia Roberts meanwhile was a certified Big Deal in 1992, when Jurassic Park was casting. She'd broken at the turn of the decade with Pretty Woman and Flatliners and followed it up with a distinctly star-like turn in Hook for Spielberg. But that wasn't enough to turn her audition for Ellie Sattler into anything more concrete as she too was overlooked for Laura Dern.
