The Plot: Depressed, wealthy divorcee Danny (Kevin Corrigan) attempts to get fit in an effort to improve his outlook on life, coming into contact with absurdly positive gym owner Trevor (Guy Pearce), and his gorgeous trainer Kat (Cobie Smulders). Soon enough, feelings become massively confused between the three of them. Why It's Awesome: Andrew Bujalksi's (Computer Chess) unconventional romantic dramedy is an impressive melding of art-house and mainstream sensibilities, roping in Corrigan, Pearce and Smulders for a sometimes discomforting but always engrossing examination of three distinct human perspectives. The characters defy convention at every turn, allowing Bujalski to strike an unpredictable tone, while giving under-appreciated character actor Corrigan likely his meatiest and most impressive role to date. Smulders and Pearce aren't far behind, though, betraying their chiseled good looks to reveal the damaged machinery underneath. The central trio may be too unpleasant for some viewers, but in its awkwardness it feels so painfully true to life.
