20 Indiana Jones Easter Eggs You Never Noticed

10. René Belloq Swallows A Fly (Apparently) - Raiders Of The Lost Ark

One of the weirdest and most hysterically funny scenes in the entire franchise is one that can completely go over your head if you're not paying total attention. When Indy threatens to blow the Ark up with a bazooka, villain René Belloq (Paul Freeman) turns to Indy and starts mocking him. Meanwhile, a fly lands on Freeman's face, and as it moves to his lip, the insect suddenly disappears while he is speaking. As it evidently didn't fly away, the only logical conclusion, of course, is that Freeman ate the fly in order not to flub the take, right? MovieMistakes sure seems to think so, but they're wrong. The fly disappears as Belloq says the line, "You're gonna give mercenaries a bad name", and Freeman later admitted that the fly did indeed fly away as he said the word "bad". So, why isn't his evident on-screen? Spielberg, devil that he is, rightly thought it would be hilarious to cut the frames of the fly buzzing away, so it looks as though the villain ate a fly mid-sentence with no qualms at all. In fan circles, the scene has a fair degree of infamy, and though it's cited as one of the series' most-paused moments, there's a good chance you've never noticed it (especially before the days of Blu-ray) because...why would you?
