3. Saw III

Saw III is significant because it finally features John Kramer's on-screen demise, even if that didn't stop him hanging around for every subsequent movie in flashback form.
Completing the arcs of several of the series' prominent characters (specifically Detective Kerry and Amanda), while upping the grisliness and focusing on the theme of forgiveness, Saw III adds plenty to the Saw mythos even if it doesn't feel quite as water-right as its predecessors.
Some of the harsh death scenes might rub some the wrong way, especially the unfair demises of Kerry and Lynn, but the final twist is a brutal kicker, and Jigsaw's death, at the hands of a circular saw, was suitably epic. Also, that brain surgery scene...
