Clearly, the money that went into the stunning digital effects work meant that there wasn't much left to give to the fake beard department. Because Benedict Cumberbatch's attempt at a beard - which is either a very bad fake or a very tragic real beard - is the stuff of nightmares.

On the other hand, the make-up work that went into his smashed hands - at every stage of his recovery from that horrific shot of him heavily pinned in hospital to the scars he's left with in Kamar-Taj - is quite wonderful and deserved awards. Maybe if his beard hadn't looked so terribly the hand-work might have got more attention.
