The Mummy 1999 Vs The Mummy 2017: Which Is Better?
6. Supporting Cast
1999's film was definitely a mixed bag as far as its supporting cast was concerned: John Hannah was intermittently irritating and amusing as Evelyn's foppish older brother Jonathan, and Omid Djalili was incredibly annoying as the creepy prison warden, but Kevin J. O'Connor's Beni was great, and Oded Fehr made for a bada** Ardeth Bay.
The new movie had a fantastic supporting cast on paper but also made rather uneven use of them. Jake Johnson is basically a grating, loud sidekick who doesn't do much of real amusement or interest and recent Golden Globe nominee Courtney B. Vance ends up killed after just a few minutes of screen time. Still, Russell Crowe shows up and basically steals the entire movie as Dr. Henry Jekyll.
Winner: This is a real tough one because both movies could really have done much better, but Crowe's over-the-top performance is about as fun as the reboot gets, and his infectious energy brings a lot to the table.
