There's a reason the 1999 film made a huge $415.9 million against an $80 million budget: because it's an extremely fun movie in spite of its flaws. It doesn't take itself too seriously, there's great banter between Fraser and Weisz, and at its core it's simply a well-oiled blockbuster that plays extremely well to its strengths.

While the most undemanding audiences might view the new Mummy as dumb fun, it's hard to ignore the movie's overwhelming blandness, with moldy gags about Nick and Jenny's prior hook-ups, and set-pieces that simply aren't interesting enough to be especially enjoyable or memorable.

Winner: 1999 without needing to try, really. The reboot's marketing suggested a rather dull, unnecessary retread, and that's pretty much exactly what it was.
