Wait, How Many Joker Movies Are DC Making?!
Whatever doesn't kill you...
Jared Leto IS reprising his role as The Joker, with a standalone movie for his take on the character reportedly confirmed.
Word comes from Variety that Leto will be starring and executive producing a solo movie for the Clown Prince of Crime, with DC and Warner Bros. looking to build up a mini-universe from Suicide Squad.
Aside from this Joker movie, it was previously announced that Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn was getting her own spin-off, which now appears to have been amalgamated with the Birds of Prey movie, set to be directed by Cathy Yan.
That's probably replaced Gotham City Sirens on the DC slate, which was again going to be a Quinn-centric tale with David Ayer set to direct, but all movies are/were expected to feature the Joker in at least a small capacity.
Along with those there's Suicide Squad 2, directed by Gavin O'Connor, which will star Robbie and is again rumoured to feature Leto, and a previously announced Joker/Harley Quinn movie, from Glenn Ficarra and John Requa, in which both actors would star.
On top of all that(!), Warner Bros. are also developing another Joker movie that will stand apart from the DCEU (or whatever they eventually end up calling it).
That one is being directed by Todd Phillips and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, and is set to serve as an origin story that will take a lot of cues from movies like The King of Comedy. Although he's been coy on the matter, Joaquin Phoenix has reportedly been in talks to star.
So that's six DC movies in some stage of development or that have at least previously been announced that would likely feature one Joker or another. Of course, none of these actually have firm release dates - the closest is Suicide Squad 2 being released sometime in 2019 - so which ones happen is anyone's guess, and it's not clear whether Warner Bros. themselves even know at this point, but hey, maybe Joker will even fight Batman in one of them.
