10 Pointless (Yet Awesome) Character Abilities In Video Games

7. Crying For Mario - Luigi's Mansion

Luigi's Mansion
Nintendo

It's fair to say that many were surprised when Nintendo announced at Space World 2000 that not only would their next “Mario” game barely feature the red overall'ed man of action and instead showcase his lankier brother Luigi, but would also be a horror themed ghost hunting game. In all honesty, it sounded like the absolute other end of the scale.

Not only was Luigi’s Mansion a brilliant title that made gold-vacuuming gluttons of us all, it was surprisingly immersive as well. Luigi (bless him) is more than a bit of a scaredy cat, so hearing him shakily hum his own theme song and shiver to the core at the sight of anything spooky was adorable. As too was the ability to make Luigi call out, “Mario!” “Maaaaarioooo!!” again and again.

Of course, it served no purpose to the actual gameplay purpose. Unless Green Mario's more heroic brother eventually turned up after tremulously yelling his name a billion times.
