8 Video Game Endings That Had More Questions Than Answers

6. Alan Wake

"It's not a lake, it's an ocean."

Alan Wake's mysterious last lines could really mean anything. Telling the tale of a novelist who has traveled to the small town of Bright Falls to overcome his difficulty with writer's block, Alan soon gets more than he bargained for when his wife disappears and the work he's written begins to come to life, puppeteered by a dark, shadowy force.

By the end of the game, Alan has discovered how to dispel the darkness, and realises that to free his wife from the evil forces he must swap places with her to maintain balance. Putting himself at the bottom of a lake, she climbs out freely - but what exactly has been taunting Mr. Wake for the entirety of the play through? And what do his mysterious final words mean?

We have no idea what this ocean could be, nor who the strange doppelganger referred to as Mr. Scratch is. And since Alan Wake runs like TV series with only one season completed (six episodes in the first game, and two in DLC), it's likely we never will, either. Poor Alan's going to have to get used to being stuck underwater for the forseeable future.
