Less a declarative "F**k you world, I don't care what you think!" statement of rebellious intent, more an ageing rocker screaming "Remember me?!" as they do something atrocious to get back in the headlines. GTA V's torture scene came out of nowhere, and was about as effective delivering a message as a postman with narcolepsy.

It's literally set up as a torture porn-style menagerie of implements you can pick up to bludgeon the hapless victim tied to the chair in front of you, and whilst the game does try to make a comment on American politics by noting the information you're getting is useless due to the circumstances, its execution favours indulging in violence for the sake of it, rather than anything else.

The sequence is mandatory if you want to play the story, the only 'choice' present is which weapon you want to use, and Rockstar's response was "Well, if you don't want to play it, turn the game off", which doesn't exactly sound like they designed the sequence to mean anything in the first place.
