Call of Duty's "reimagining" of Modern Warfare is absolutely stellar.

Against waves of doubt and expectation (that never truly landed one way or the other before launch), Infinity Ward returning to the one COD that put them on the map allows the team to assess what worked and what didn't. Modern Warfare 2019 is the product of studying the competition from the last 12 years, feeling like after a generation of experimentation, Activision are finally confident on what Call of Duty "is".

Brilliantly, it's not just one thing that MW 2019 gets right; not "one new feature" fans had been calling out for. Instead, this is a sequel of refinement, iterating on a formula Infinity Ward lay down over a decade ago, and touching things up where it matters. The campaign too, is a fictionalised reinterpretation of various real-world conflicts and global news stories, combined to spin a yarn on the ramifications of occupancy in foreign territories, plus a big ol' evil villain takedown at the end.

Gameplay-wise you can now slide while sprinting, reload while aiming or mount your weapons on the environment for less recoil. Tiny additions in the grand scheme of things, but taken alongside reworked weapon handling, exemplary maps and the best sound design in the series' history, it's one hell of a powerful package.
