With Tony Hawk, as well as the sport of skateboarding as a whole reaching the apex of its popularity in the late '90s, a video game was the logical next step. And when Tony Hawk's Pro Skater first hit the shelves in the fall of 1999, gamers the world over were amazed at how great it actually was.

It had tight, responsive controls and was just realistic enough to connect with the audience, but also just outlandish enough to keep things exciting as you progressed. Plus, the game had an incredibly memorable, high-energy soundtrack that is still held in high regard today, just under two decades later.

It was truly a revolutionary title and a catalyst for the even better games that would come shortly after.
