Tomb Raider: Ranking Every Game From Worst To Best
6. Tomb Raider (1996)
The one that started it all, where we were first introduced to the tank top, short short, combat boot wearing heroine we’d come to know and love. And her very first cutscene, where she gives a smile as tech mogul Jaqueline Natla tasks her with retrieving the Atlantean Scion, spoke to the thrill seeker in all of us.
Lara came out swinging, taking out a whole pack of wolves in the opening cutscene with nothing but her iconic twin pistols and “Let’s get this done” attitude.
With the sheer technical capabilities on display, as well as one of the presence of an unabashedly female protagonist, this is the game that set the groundwork for all that followed.
With vast levels that stretch out far and wide, puzzles that span entire areas, and an atmospheric soundtrack, its the 3D Indiana Jones-esque adventure on home consoles we’d been waiting for.
While it’s largely agreed that the game’s controls and graphics feel extremely dated today, it’s always good for a little bit of nostalgia, and showing us just how far 3D games have come.
