10 Most Haunted Places In Scotland

8. Edinburgh Vaults

There are thousands of terrifying ghost stories that have emerged from people who have visited the vaults. Although there are plenty of explanations for them, mainly psychological (if you think something is haunted, you'll believed that you've felt a ghost instead of someone else or a draught). But there are some things that no one is able to explain... The vaults underneath the country's capital housed thousands of people who were poor and had no where else to go, as well as those who suffered from the plague. As you can imagine, thousands of people died in the vaults and crime was high. People were beaten to death, raped and sold as prostitutes. Famous 'grave robbers' William Burke and William Hare were rumoured to have went into the vaults looking for fresh bodies, because who would miss peasants who had no friends, family or money? You can take tours down into the vaults if you're brave enough and of course, you're paying to be scared. The staff don't really need to create a scary atmosphere because it's scary enough. With wide open spaces, little light and cold corners, you get the feeling that you're not alone. Some rooms are said to house a banshee who will chose one person to kill, so make sure you're not the last one to leave the room, otherwise she'll get you. People have been so scared that they'll hold on to the hands of a loved one, only to discover that their loved one had their hands in their pocket the entire time...
