When he signed, Dutch full back Alexander Buttner was expected to act as understudy to the ageing Patrice Evra and was one of Sir Alex Ferguson's last signings for the club before his retirement at the end of the 2012/13 season.

Buttner seemed to have everything Ferguson wanted from his full backs: pace, skill, vision and a very capable left foot but looks were deceiving as the Dutchman failed to impress when given his chance to shine.

Even David Moyes didn't take a liking to Buttner and the Dutchman found his playing time limited but it wasn't until Louis Van Gaal was confirmed as the incoming Manchester United manager that Buttner held his hands up and declared he wanted to leave.

Apparently, he and Van Gaal have a long-standing, personal rift that would've made any further time in Manchester torturous for the left back. Luckily for him, Dynamo Moscow paid £4.4 million to end his United nightmare, which actually turned a small profit for the Old Trafford club too.
